About Us

The Bay of Plenty Trailer Yacht Squadron was incorporated in 1976. It is based in the city of Rotorua and operates from its marina in Okawa Bay situated on near by Lake Rotoiti. ( see google earth- Lake Rotoiti).  BOPTYS has approximately 130 members with various classes of trailer yachts.  Trailer yachts are administered by the New Zealand Trailer Association ( www.nztya.org.nz) There are well over 160  trailer yacht designs registered  with NZTYA in New Zealand. BOPTYS is the second largest club and the largest in the North Island of New Zealand. We have a proud history with a proven record of champions in both provincial National and International events. The Rotorua lakes are a national treasure, renowed for both their beauty and uncluttered sailing area. World class trout fishing in all our trophy lakes is easily accessable from our trailer yachts.

BOPTYS has been closely associated with Visual Impaired Sailing. We are lucky to have several VIP members in our club, most of whom own and sail there own boats. All of them race and have distinguished themselves at both National and International events.

The 2009 IFDS World Blind Sailing Championships is in good hands under the guidence of the organising comittee.  The Chair person Don McGowan will guide the executive under the direction of Alan Dick, who has been appointed Project manager. Secretary Angela Thompson has many years experiance in District council. Bruce & Jackie Holt career educators, as well as Emily Prichard representing Rotorua District Council. Tony Thompson, Team manager at New York in 2006 and a veteran Noelex 25 competitor.

Adrian McHardy, International manager for an aerospace manufacturer, Garth Wilson Civil engineer, Eddie Morre accountant, Colin Burson retired Pulp & Paper engineer. Dick Lancaster VIP previous world VIP Champion and chairman of Blind Sailing New Zealand.

Most important all of the organising executive are keen sailors!  All, working to make this a memorable world class experiance.
