The 2009 World Blind Sailing NZ competition will be held on Lake Rotorua in the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand. Registration will be on Friday the 13th March 2009 at the Lakefront Race H.Q. Five days of racing will be held over the following week with the Awards Dinner scheduled for Saturday the 21st March 2009. Please continue to check this website regulary for news / updates. New Zealand (Aeoteroa) is an Island Nation, located in the Southern Hemisphere 35, 45.0S 176, 32.0 E and enjoys a sub tropical summer climate with mild winters.

 

Its is said that every New Zealand family has at least one boat and the general population is less than one hour from a beach on the coast line or a fresh water lake.

 

Water sports in particular yachting rates as one of the top five pleasure activities in New Zealand. New Zealand has a proud and illustrious history in Yachting Regattas including several Gold medals in previous IFDS Blind Sailing events.

Rotorua, home to BOPTYS is located in the Western Bay of Plenty on the volcanic plataeu... Rotorua is world famous for its volcanic activity and its 26 pristine volcanic lakes, the largest Lake Rotorua.

 

The City of Rotorua was incorporated in 1888. It has been a center for our indigenous culture and a famous tourist destination for over 150 years.

As a long established tourist town, there is a wide range of accommodation from 1st class hotels, motels home stay and back packers.

 

Rotorua was host to the 2006 World Mountain bike Championships

 

Blind Sailing World Championships 2009 will be sailed on Lake Rotorua in March 2009 (late summer).

The Venue

BOPTYS as the organizing authority will conduct the Regatta on Lake Rotorua.

The headquarters for the event will be from the Lake Rotorua Water sports Trust facility

Facilities

The Rotorua Water Sports Trust has been established as a center for water based activities in the city of Rotorua. It was formally the original Rotorua Yacht Club est. 1933. The Water sports center provides an ideal Regatta headquarters for this event as well as for regatta race management. The water sport center is fully functional and is also headquarters for the local Lakes Coast Guard.

HAVANA MOTOR LODGE

The Havana Motor Lodge is less than 5 minutes walk to the lakefront, the city, restaurants, shopping centre, Polynesian Spa, Convention Centre and the Energy Events Centre. The Havana Motor Lodge is located opposite the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in a quiet, central setting.

 

There are 22 fully equipped units in total, all with a Queen sized bed. There are 2 private mineral pools, as well as an in-ground heated swimming pool. Rooms are clean and comfortable with small kitchen and ensuite bathroom.

Heywoods Motor Lodge offer 22 superbly equipped units, studios, one and two bedroom family units, as well as a large house which is suitable for group bookings (sleeps 12 people). Heywoods is only a 5 minute walk to the city centre.

 

Heywoods is a fairly large motor lodge with ample parking, laundry, a large heated swimming pool, a sauna, and a spa pool onsite. All rooms have lovely décor and are spacious with a kitchen, bathroom, microwave, shower, phone, Sky TV, ironing facilities and thermal heating. Private spa pool units are also available. Rotorua has ample public transport, and local Cab & taxi services. Most tourism attractions provide a door to door pick up service. The major Hotels provide a shuttle bus service to and from the local Rotorua domestic airport.

Emergency Services

Rotorua (Lakes District Health) operate a large regional hospital which is within a few minutes of the lake front. It provides comprehensive medical and surgical services.

Minor medical requirements can be accommodated by "Lakes Prime Care Medical Center" Lakes Prime care has offered to provide medical services for the duration of the Regatta Lakes Prime Care is located with 5 minutes of the regatta headquarters. An on the water medical team will be provided during on water activities
